More than 5,000 women from Ogun State have thrown their weight behind the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing his administration's commitment to inclusive governance and women-focused policies. The women's endorsement came during a celebration of International Women's Day, organised by the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development at the Royal Pavilion in Ijebu-Ode. According to the women, their numerical strength should translate into meaningful political influence nationwide. The gathering also saw female political office holders and stakeholders from all 20 local government areas of the state in attendance.
The women also unanimously endorsed the senatorial ambition of Dapo Abiodun, describing him as a seasoned leader capable of attracting greater developmental opportunities to Ogun East Senatorial District. The Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, reaffirmed the unwavering support of Ogun women for President Tinubu's second-term bid, describing the Renewed Hope Agenda as impactful in advancing women's inclusion, economic participation, and access to opportunities.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, noted that the large turnout reflected the growing unity and influence of women in governance and public life. Adeleye commended both federal and state governments for implementing policies that support women's advancement, and acknowledged the efforts of Oluremi Tinubu through the Renewed Hope Initiative, as well as the Ajose Foundation led by Bamidele Abiodun. The Commissioner urged women to actively participate in the political process, stressing the importance of voter engagement in achieving sustainable progress.
The next step for these women is to leverage their Permanent Voter Cards and support leaders who prioritise their interests. They must also continue to push for reforms that address systemic barriers limiting women's participation in politics.
The endorsement of President Tinubu and Dapo Abiodun by Ogun women is a testament to the administration's commitment to inclusive governance and women-focused policies. However, the women's call for increased female political participation is a reminder that more needs to be done to address systemic barriers limiting women's involvement in politics. As the 2026 elections approach, it is crucial that women translate their numerical strength into meaningful political influence nationwide.
