Title: Ogun State Takes on Waste Menace, Embarks on Massive Clearance Operation
In a bid to put an end to the mounting waste problem in Ogun State, the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has launched a comprehensive special operation to clear the backlog of waste that has been piling up across the state. The initiative, spearheaded by the newly-appointed Managing Director of OGWAMA, Farouk Akintunde, aims to rid the state of the accumulated waste that had been neglected for far too long.
Akintunde revealed that the operation has been rolled out simultaneously in major towns such as Abeokuta, Sango-Ota, Ijebu-Ode, and Ifo, among others. As part of the effort, the authority has also revived its "Night Operation" which was earlier suspended. This move is expected to further boost the clearance process.
In a significant development, the Ogun State Association of Waste Managers (AWAN) has also resumed its operations after a meeting with the Executive and Members of the association. The meeting resolved some lingering issues that had been hindering their work. With these issues now resolved, waste managers have resumed their duties in their designated areas, contributing significantly to the evacuation of waste across the state.
To ensure a successful operation, the OGWAMA Managing Director has called on residents to cooperate by giving their waste to the assigned waste managers. He also urged them to containerize their waste and place them in front of their homes, rather than dumping them indiscriminately on roadsides and medians. A warning has been issued to anyone caught dumping waste inappropriately - they will face prosecution.
This massive clearance operation is a welcome development for Ogun State residents, who have been grappling with the challenges posed by waste accumulation. With the renewed commitment of the OGWAMA and the support of waste managers, the state is poised to overcome its waste management challenges and maintain a cleaner environment. The success of this operation will also serve as a model for other states in Nigeria to follow.
