**Justice Takes Center Stage in Ogun: ₦6.1bn Court Complex for Abeokuta**
The Ogun State Government has finally given the green light to construct a state-of-the-art Court of Appeal complex in Abeokuta, marking a significant milestone in the state's pursuit of justice for its citizens. At the last State Executive Council meeting, the government approved a ₦6.1 billion contract for the development of the complex on a 2.6-hectare land in the Kobape area of Abeokuta.
This move is a direct response to the long-standing issue of litigants and legal practitioners bearing the financial burden of traveling to Ibadan for appeals. It's estimated that a clear majority of appeals heard by the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal originate from Ogun State, leading to increased costs and delays in resolving cases. With the Abeokuta Division now taking shape, the state government has demonstrated its commitment to bringing justice closer to the people.
In preparation for the take-off of the Abeokuta Division, the state government has already constructed six duplexes for justices in Ibara and set aside twenty bungalows for support staff in Prince Court Estate, Kobape. The President of the Court of Appeal gave the nod for operations to commence in 2025, following a special sitting in Abeokuta in May 2024. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new complex is set to take place soon, with construction expected to be completed within a year.
This development is a testament to the state government's unwavering commitment to justice sector reforms. By democratizing access to justice, strengthening institutions, and ensuring efficient delivery of judicial services, the Ogun State Ministry of Justice is paving the way for a more just and equitable society. As the state continues to push the frontiers of justice, one thing is clear: the people of Ogun will no longer have to bear the brunt of traveling to Ibadan for appeals, and justice will finally take center stage in the state.
