Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has commended journalists in Kogi State for their professionalism, patriotism, and strong sense of responsibility. He made this known at the grand finale of the 2026 Press Week organized by the Correspondents' Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Kogi State Council. The event took place on Thursday, 26 March, in Lokoja and featured a public lecture, a presentation of awards, and a N250 million fundraising for the construction of a befitting chapel secretariat.
Ododo's representative, Commissioner for Information and Communication Strategy Kingsley Fanwo, described journalists as a credible link between the people and government. He applauded them for projecting the activities of the administration and the state in a positive light, highlighting the opportunities that abound in Kogi State.
The governor acknowledged the critical role of the media in promoting good governance, stating that a responsible media is essential for effective governance. He emphasized the need for journalists to act with a full sense of responsibility to the nation, state, and profession.
Governor Ododo's words of appreciation for Kogi State journalists are a welcome respite from the usual criticism of the media. However, the governor must walk the talk by ensuring that his administration is transparent and accountable to the people. The N250 million fundraising for the chapel secretariat is a notable initiative, but it is essential that the funds are utilized efficiently and effectively. The governor's emphasis on the importance of a responsible media is timely, given the current state of the country's transportation sector. Dr. Femi Ajisafe's lecture on the potential of inland waterways as a transport hub is a significant contribution to the conversation. It is now up to the governor to take concrete steps to address the challenges in the sector and unlock the potential of Nigeria's waterways. The recognition of deserving individuals at the event is also noteworthy, particularly the award to former governor Yahaya Bello. However, the governor must ensure that such recognition is not just a formality, but a genuine attempt to acknowledge and reward outstanding contributions to society.
