A 43-year-old staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been accused of attempting to procure abortion for his alleged lover, a corps member who later died. Abbas Olalekan, a resident of Mosafueto area, Oke-Ata, Abeokuta, was docked in an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates' Court on Monday.
The prosecution alleges that Olalekan conspired with others to commit a felony, specifically abortion, and attempted to procure abortion by supplying drugs to the deceased corps member. The alleged affair between Olalekan and the deceased corps member resulted in her pregnancy, which he allegedly tried to terminate.
The prosecution claims that the drugs administered by Olalekan led to the death of the corps member. The offence is said to contravene Sections 516 and 230 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Olalekan pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. The case has been adjourned until April 14 for further hearing.
Olalekan is currently remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending perfection of the bail conditions.
