Nigerian students have made a remarkable achievement at the African Spelling Bee 2026, held in Zimbabwe on March 20. The Junior Championship was won by Oluwadamilola Adeolu, a student of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti.
Nigeria also took third place in the Junior category, with Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, finishing in third place. Additionally, Nigeria finished as the 2nd Best Country Spelling Bee Team in the overall group ranking.
The Nigerian team, comprising Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Oghenetano Idoghor, Chinedu Okediachi, Maryam Yusuf, and others, showcased courage, preparation, and team spirit throughout the contest. The demanding format of the competition, which included a speed round and single-word elimination rounds, tested the pace, accuracy, and composure of the contestants.
