**The Niger Delta Games: Uniting Youth and Showcasing Talent**
In a grand ceremony that kicked off the 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games in Benin City, the richness of Edo State's cultural heritage was on full display. Over 3,000 athletes from the nine Niger Delta States are participating in this seven-day event, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and organized by Dunamis Icons.
At the event, a representative of President Bola Tinubu, Minister of State for Industry, John Enoh, emphasized the importance of sports as a tool for unity and empowerment. He encouraged the NDDC to invest in initiatives that empower youth and women, acknowledging that sports can be a powerful instrument for human capital development.
Meanwhile, Governor Monday Okpebholo announced a prize of N20 million for the winning state and N10 million for the runner-up. He saw the games as more than just a competition, but a symbol of the Niger Delta's resilience, talent, and human potential. He urged the athletes to compete with passion and integrity, showcasing the strength, courage, and determination of their people.
The Managing Director of the NDDC, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, stressed the commission's commitment to sponsoring the games and encouraged state governors to join in. He highlighted the commission's efforts to keep the competition amateur-focused, to prevent state governments from bringing in external athletes to win medals.
The Niger Delta Games are a testament to the region's potential for excellence and unity. By supporting this initiative, the NDDC is investing in the future of the Niger Delta, empowering its youth, and promoting a culture of sportsmanship and excellence. As the games unfold, let us cheer on our athletes and celebrate the spirit of the Niger Delta: a region that is not just defined by its resources, but by its resilience, talent, and boundless human potential.
