Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes is poised to take Eberechi Eze's place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad. This comes after Eze suffered a lower leg injury that kept him out of Arsenal's Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City on Sunday, a 2-0 loss.
Barnes has prior experience with the English national team, having earned his only cap in a friendly against Wales in October 2020. Scotland had attempted to persuade Barnes to switch his international allegiance to play for Steve Clarke's team at the World Cup this summer, citing his eligibility through his grandparents. However, Barnes declined the offer.
The 28-year-old has had a successful season with Newcastle, scoring 14 goals across all competitions. His expected inclusion in the England squad comes ahead of friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, which will give fringe players a chance to secure a regular spot. The games are scheduled to take place at Wembley Stadium on 27 March and 31 March.
Jarell Quansah, a defender from Bayer Leverkusen, has been ruled out of the friendlies due to a thigh injury.
Harvey Barnes' call-up to the England squad is a significant boost for the Newcastle winger, who has been in excellent form this season. His inclusion in the squad will be a welcome addition to Thomas Tuchel's team, and he will look to make a strong impression in the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
