NDLEA nabs ex-Lagos lawmaker with drugs, bursts narcotics hidden in baby diapers

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former two-term councillor in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos state, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, after recovering 40 kilograms of illicit drugs from his residence, as the agency recorded series of nationwide interceptions involving narcotics and suspected explosive materials.
Olalekan, 45, who previously represented the Orimedu community and currently works as a legislative aide, was arrested on Monday, March 2, 2026, at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki.
A search of the property by NDLEA operatives led to the recovery of 40 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, concealed in one of the rooms.
According to director of media and Advocacy NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, in a statement at the weekend, the suspect admitted ownership of both the drugs and the house where they were found.
He also confirmed that he had served two terms as a councilor representing Orimedu in the LGA.
In a separate operation in the Federal Capital Territory, NDLEA officers on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 intercepted a 32-year-old businessman, Emeka Hyginus Okwor, while travelling in a vehicle from Obollo-Afor in Enugu state to Zuba, Abuja.
A search of his luggage uncovered 1,000 pills of tapentadol (250mg) carefully concealed inside baby diapers. Okwor reportedly admitted ownership of the drugs, revealing that he intended to deliver the consignment to Guduwa village in Gurara LGA of Niger state, where he operates a provision store.
On the same day, NDLEA operatives on patrol along the Kabba–Obajana highway in Kogi state intercepted a parcel of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis weighing 1.55 kilograms.
The substance was hidden inside a standing fan carton belonging to a 36-year-old Cameroonian, Mey Ali Muhamat, from Maroua in the Republic of Cameroon.
Investigations showed the suspect was travelling in a commercial bus from Lagos to Cameroon via Lokoja, Kano and Maiduguri when he was arrested.
In another development, NDLEA patrol teams along the Mokwa–Jebba road in Niger state on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 intercepted a commercial bus coming from Ibadan in Oyo state carrying 500 pieces of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) components hidden in a white sack.
The items were allegedly meant for delivery to a recipient in Pelegi.
A swift follow-up operation led to the arrest of the intended recipient, 21-year-old Osama Abdullahi, in Pelegi, Mashegu LGA of Niger state.
Elsewhere, NDLEA operatives in Yola, Adamawa state recovered 122,000 pills of tramadol and 700 grams of methamphetamine concealed in a false compartment of a truck marked ENU 645XX.
The vehicle was transporting 2,000 cartons of locally produced drinks.
In Kano state, a 20-year-old suspect, Muhammed Ali, was arrested on Tuesday, March 3, at Gadar Tamburawa with 11,283 pills of tramadol.
Similarly, operatives in Ogun state raided Ogere and arrested two suspects Nazifi Mudansir and Kabiru Musa with 46 kilograms of skunk.
In Delta state, two suspects, Joy Chukwuma, 25, and Eugene Felix, 22, were arrested on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at Ogwashi-Uku with 18.63 kilograms of skunk, 10.8 litres of codeine-based syrup, and 4,268 pills of tramadol and swinol.
Meanwhile, a 48-year-old suspect, Eke London, and his accomplice, Austin Isusi, 49, were apprehended at Egbisi forest in Uhumwonde LGA of Edo state, where NDLEA operatives destroyed 1,910.25 kilograms of skunk cultivated on two farms.
Another suspect, Alaba Adeboye, 47, was arrested in Ikhin town, Owan East LGA, with 176.50 kilograms of skunk.
Beyond enforcement operations, NDLEA commands across the country also intensified their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign in schools, religious centres, workplaces and communities.
Awareness lectures were delivered in several institutions including Government Senior College, Apata in Ibadan; Government Girls Secondary School, Katcha in Niger State; Sango Junior Secondary School, Agege in Lagos; and Archbishop Akinola International Secondary School, Afikpo in Ebonyi state, among others.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers of the Lagos, FCT, Kano, Niger, Kogi, Edo, Ogun, Delta and Adamawa commands for the arrests and seizures.
