NCoS, partners seek increase in productivity of correctional farm centres
**NCoS and Partners Seek Better Use of Correctional Farm Centres in Nigeria** The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has joined forces with Hope Behind Bars (HBB), an organization that supports prison reform, to boost the productivity of correctional farm centres across the country. These centres are not just meant to keep inmates occupied, but also to help them acquire new skills and contribute to Nigeria's food supply. Speaking at a recent event, the Controller General of NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, emphasized the need to optimize these centres for a better future for inmates. He highlighted that the agricultural projects not only benefit the inmates but also the Nigerian society as a whole. According to him, these projects are crucial for inmate welfare, food production, and skills acquisition. Mr Nwakuche also emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in enhancing the productivity of these centres. He believes that by working together, they can introduce modern agricultural practices, increase efficiency, and expand the economic opportunities available to inmates upon their release. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, represented by Magdalene Ajani, commended the efforts of HBB for recognizing that prison reform is a collective effort that requires collaboration from both the public and private sectors. In a bid to address food insecurity in the country, HBB has launched a pilot project called the Farming Justice Project in custodial centres in Dukpa, Kuje, Kirikiri, and Oko. This project aims to provide inmates with the skills and resources needed to become productive members of society upon their release. As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of food insecurity and prison reform, the collaboration between NCoS and HBB offers a beacon of hope for a brighter future. By working together, we can create a system that not only reforms inmates but also helps them to become contributing members of society.
