**Navy Catches Oil Thieves in Akwa Ibom, Hands Them Over to EFCC**
In a major crackdown on oil theft, the Nigerian Navy has arrested nine suspects involved in the illicit activity in Akwa Ibom State. The suspects, who were attempting to siphon crude oil from an offshore platform in the Asabo oil field, were apprehended on a wooden boat by operatives of NNS Jubilee, with the assistance of Nigerian Navy Ship BONNY and Nigerian Navy Ship SHIRORO.
According to Commodore Mohammed Manga, Commander of NNS Jubilee, the suspects were caught red-handed on February 23, 2026, while trying to steal crude oil. The Navy recovered the wooden boat, which was used in the operation, along with tools and equipment used for the crime. The suspects were handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation.
This operation is part of the Navy's ongoing effort to curb oil theft, which is not only a crime but also threatens Nigeria's economic stability, maritime security, and the environment. Oil theft has become a major concern in Nigeria, and the Navy has intensified its anti-illegal bunkering operations to protect critical national assets, coastal infrastructure, and commercial maritime routes.
Commodore Manga stated that the Navy's patrols and surveillance efforts have been successful in catching oil thieves, and the Navy will continue to work with other agencies to bring such criminals to justice. The EFCC, which received the suspects and exhibits, has promised to conduct a thorough investigation to identify all those involved in the crime.
This development is a welcome move towards addressing the issue of oil theft in Nigeria. As the country continues to grapple with economic challenges, it is essential that all efforts are made to protect national assets and prevent economic crimes. The Navy's efforts to curb oil theft are a step in the right direction, and we hope that this will lead to more successful operations in the future.
