The Nigerian Navy has been cracking down on oil thieves in Rivers State, and the latest operation has yielded impressive results. Eight suspected oil thieves have been arrested, and a large consignment of illegally refined petroleum products has been intercepted. The operation, led by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER, was prompted by credible intelligence on illicit activities in the Degema/Ogbogoro/Ogbologo general areas.
The naval patrol team intercepted two wooden boats carrying approximately 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). The suspects were subsequently arrested, while additional armed accomplices fled the scene upon sighting the naval patrol team. The arrested suspects and recovered products are currently in custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
