Kano's Inland Port Scandal: Ganduje's Trial Stalls Again
A dramatic turn of events has unfolded at a Kano High Court, where the trial of former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, along with three others, over a multi-billion-naira inland port project has hit a snag. The case, which has been making headlines in recent times, has been adjourned pending a ruling on the defence's objection.
At the heart of the matter is the ownership of the Dala Inland Dry Port, a project that has been touted as a game-changer for the Kano economy. The state government has accused the defendants of conspiring to transfer 80% of the port's shares to a private company, City Green Enterprise, while allegedly misappropriating over N4.49 billion meant for infrastructure projects at the port. The funds, which were meant for road construction, electricity supply, and fencing, were allegedly diverted for personal gain.
The defence team, led by A.S. Gadanya, SAN, has argued that the legal approval presented by the state's legal team was meant for a different matter and should be nullified. However, the state's lawyer, R.O. Zakariyya, has countered that the prosecution has proper legal backing and presented a valid fiat authorising the team to handle the matter.
As the trial stalls, many Nigerians are left wondering about the implications of this scandal for the Kano economy and the country at large. The alleged misuse of public funds and abuse of office by high-ranking officials is a stark reminder of the challenges facing our nation's development. The case also raises questions about the effectiveness of our justice system in holding those in power accountable for their actions.
The adjournment of the case has been set for May 6, when the judge will deliver a ruling on the defence's objection. The outcome of this trial will have far-reaching consequences for the defendants, the state government, and the people of Kano. As Nigerians, we can only hope that justice will be served and that those responsible for this alleged scandal will be held accountable.
