Thousands of families gathered at Owerri Mall, also known as Shoprite Centre, over Easter Sunday and Monday for the MTN Family Fun Fair, a festive event organised by MTN Nigeria. Attendees enjoyed music performances by artists including Achara Man and Cola Boy, participated in games like freeze dance and Be-in Zero, and took part in family activities such as spouses tying each other's headscarves and neckties. Raffle prizes included televisions, refrigerators, gas cookers, generators, bags of rice, umbrellas, caps, and a keke Napep vehicle, though the winner of the tricycle forfeited it by leaving the venue after purchasing a ticket. Free cinema tickets were also given out, with a screening of the Niger Delta-themed movie The Creek held on Easter Monday at Genesis Hall.
Yellow Santa Claus, MTN's festive ambassador, distributed gifts to participants. Chibuike Obilor, MTN's Imo State Manager, welcomed attendees and confirmed plans to improve the 2026 edition. "Check out the environment, green and set for the occasion. There are lots of things to make both children and adults happy. So, we are ready to flow with you to make you happy, have a great experience, think and remember MTN. So, MTN is Yellow and No 1 communication company in Nigeria and we want to remain No 1 courtesy of all of you seated here," he said. Barr Ijeoma Ozuruigbo, Managing Director of MTN partner OZB Communications, praised MTN's social impact, citing scholarships, healthcare support, and business opportunities provided through its foundation.
MTN's giveaway of a keke Napep that was forfeited by the winner reveals how fleeting opportunities can be, even when handed out by corporate giants. Chibuike Obilor's push to make the 2026 fun fair "more exciting" suggests MTN is investing heavily in brand loyalty through emotional engagement. For Nigerians, this signals that private firms may now shape public leisure more visibly than government initiatives. Entertainment, when tied to corporate visibility, becomes both a reward and a reminder of who holds economic influence.
