The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project has been rerouted to include Ogoniland, following approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This decision honours the late Senator Mpigi Barinada Barry, former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, who died recently. Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, made the announcement during a tribute event held on April 8, 2026, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. Umahi described the rerouting as an enduring recognition of Senator Mpigi's dedication to national infrastructure development. The memorial was attended by politicians, traditional leaders from Ogoniland, and other dignitaries. A statement signed by Mohammed A. Ahmed, Director of Information and Public Relations, confirmed the development. Umahi praised Mpigi as a man of integrity, loyalty, and consensus-building, noting his role in the election of Godswill Akpabio as Senate President. He highlighted Mpigi's advocacy for road projects across multiple states, including Lagos, Sokoto, and Kano. The late senator played a key role in advancing the Bodo-Bonny Road and rehabilitating the Eleme–Onne section of the East-West Road. Umahi expressed sorrow that Mpigi would not see the completion of these projects. The Federal Government pledged continued support for his family and community.
