Movie review: Onobiren – When survival shapes a woman’s story showcases girlchild struggles
Onobiren: When Survival Shapes a Woman’s Story is a Nollywood film that highlights some of the challenges faced by the girl child in Africa. The film depicts the ruggedness of the Niger Delta riverine community in a way that could almost attract tourists to witness the environment’s toughness. Synopsis: Onobiren is a compelling story of womanhood, resilience, and self-determination that celebrates the modern African woman. Set in contemporary Lagos, the film follows Roli, a young woman who challenges expectations to forge her own path. Through ambition, ingenuity, and unexpected partnerships, she embarks on a journey of empowerment, identity, and community transformation. Directed by Famous Odion Iraoya, the movie stars Ruby Akubueze, Bisola Aiyeola, Desmond Bryce, Deyemi Okanlawon, Norbert Young, and Patience Ozokwor, among others. This drama centres on Roli, a woman with no particular dream, who exists to be swept by the winds of whatever opportunity or circumstance life throws her way. She finds herself leaving the riverine community in Delta State to make ends meet in the big city – Lagos. All she takes with her are her struggles and the little knowledge ingrained in her by her late father. The Traditions This film illustrates how, despite strong traditions that restrict women in certain societies, some men still challenge these boundaries by empowering women, especially young girls. That was the role played by Roli’s father, a fisherman who made sure his daughter accompanied him on fishing trips in the high seas. The resistance to his decision was a pleasure to witness, as those opposing her father’s choice had valid reasons to do so. However, their objections still hindered a woman’s success in life, regardless of potential dangers. Sadly, although the film began with this theme, we were left disappointed because it never progressed towards Roli rebelling against these traditions and becoming a successful fisherman. It would have been wonderful to see Roli become a fisherman herself, encouraging other women to challenge customs and strive for a place at the table traditionally reserved for men. Instead of a successful fishing career, Roli moves to the city, a typical Nollywood cliché. This caused us to lose some interest in the film. The riverine community scenes were very engaging, though not perfect, which drew us in. The Niger Delta culture, the rivers, the sea, the shanties, and the language were a delight. However, I noticed that the pidgin English spoken by the characters in Delta didn’t sound like the typical Niger Delta Waffy language. That contrasts with the movie Tare, which excelled in depicting Niger Delta pidgin English and slang. Onobiren – Survival Onobiren: When Survival Shapes a Woman’s Story shares similarities with Tare in that both films feature a Niger Delta riverine community girl who succeeds after relocating to Lagos. Ruby Akubueze, who played Roli, is regarded as the best actor in the film. Her facial expressions during moments of pain and uncertainty remained authentic. This allowed viewers to interpret the situation and empathise with her, almost walking in her shoes and feeling what she experienced. Onobiren: When Survival Shapes a Woman’s Story is not the kind of film to judge based on colour grading or lighting. While it falls short in those areas, its story makes up for it. The nuanced but gentle drama draws you in, especially if you enjoy films about different cultures. Onobiren: When Survival Shapes a Woman’s Story scores a 6/10 and is worth watching.
