**Deepfake Scams Hit Nigeria through Social Media: Meta Takes Action**
In the digital age, scammers are getting increasingly creative with their tactics. One of the latest tricks in their bag is the use of deepfakes – high-tech forgeries of celebrities and public figures – to sell fake products and investments on social media platforms. US tech giant, Meta, has taken a bold step to curb this trend by filing lawsuits against several individuals and companies in Brazil and China who have been using this tactic.
In Brazil, Meta has sued two companies, B&B Suplementos e Cosmeticos and Brites Academia de Treinamento, as well as two individuals for impersonating a prominent physician to advertise healthcare products without regulatory approval. This is a worrying trend, especially in a country like Nigeria where fake health products and investment schemes have been a major concern. The use of deepfakes makes it even harder for people to distinguish between genuine and fake messages.
A renowned Brazilian oncologist, Drauzio Varella, has spoken out against Meta's actions, saying that they are not enough to tackle the scale of fraud in the health sector. He accused Meta of being complicit in the scam by allowing their platforms to reach a wide audience. This raises important questions about the responsibility of social media companies in preventing the spread of fake information.
In China, Meta has also taken action against Shenzhen Yunzheng Technology and Vietnamese company, Ly Van Lam, for using deepfakes to target people in the US, Japan, and other countries with fake investment schemes and luxury goods advertisements. The use of deepfakes to scam people is a global problem that requires a coordinated effort to solve.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with its own social media challenges, the Meta lawsuits serve as a reminder of the dangers of deepfake scams and the importance of fact-checking and critical thinking online. It is up to social media companies, governments, and individuals to work together to prevent the spread of fake information and protect people from these scams.
