**Nigeria's Notorious Prison Stays: El-Rufai and Malami's Current Plight**
In a shocking turn of events, two high-profile Nigerians have found themselves at the receiving end of the country's anti-corruption machinery. Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, are currently detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), respectively.
El-Rufai's health is reportedly deteriorating, with his spokesperson revealing that he experienced a nosebleed overnight while in detention. His wife was also allegedly denied the opportunity to personally hand him food on February 17. This comes after El-Rufai surrendered himself to the EFCC on February 16, following an invitation from the anti-corruption agency.
Both El-Rufai and Malami are facing probes over alleged financial misconduct and security issues. The ICPC has taken custody of El-Rufai, while the Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Malami over alleged illegal possession of firearms and terrorism financing. The Kaduna state house of assembly had earlier accused El-Rufai of misappropriating N423 billion in public funds and engaging in money laundering.
Activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to the situation, saying that Malami has reached out to him and his team, seeking to be released from detention. Sowore believes that Malami's move is a desperate attempt to gain sympathy, and that El-Rufai's nosebleed is a publicity stunt to garner public support.
Sowore's comments highlight the complexities of Nigeria's justice system and the often-murky relationships between politicians and anti-corruption agencies. While El-Rufai and Malami's detention is a result of alleged corrupt activities, their access to luxury prisons and medical care is a stark contrast to the conditions faced by ordinary Nigerians in detention.
As the country grapples with issues of corruption and accountability, the detention of these high-profile individuals serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and fair play in the justice system.
