Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has sparked controversy with a declaration he made in Bauchi on Sunday. The governor stated that any politician and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who associates with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is anti-people and an enemy of democracy. Makinde made this declaration during a visit to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed at the Ramat Presidential Lodge in Bauchi.
According to Makinde, Wike has promised to hold the PDP for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Makinde also claimed that anyone dealing with Wike and his group has agreed to support President Tinubu for 2027. He emphasized that the PDP will survive challenges and participate effectively in the 2027 general elections.
Makinde's visit to Bauchi was to identify with the people of the state and to encourage Governor Bala Mohammed, who faces challenges in his leadership. However, Makinde's declaration was met with disagreement from Mohammed, who stated that the issue of reconciliation is being midwifed by a competent court of jurisdiction, the Federal Court of Appeal.
Makinde's declaration against Wike and his group is a clear indication of the deepening divisions within the PDP. By labeling anyone who associates with Wike as anti-people and an enemy of democracy, Makinde is essentially calling for a split in the party. This move has significant implications for the 2027 general elections, where the PDP will be seeking to regain power. The people of Nigeria will be watching closely as this drama unfolds, and it remains to be seen how this will affect the party's chances in the elections.
