Major Islamist terror attack stopped in Nigeria
**Nigerian Troops Repel Large-Scale Islamist Attack in Northeast**
Over 80 militants, including three senior commanders, were killed in a major Islamist terror attack that was stopped by Nigerian troops in the country's northeast. The assault targeted positions in Mallam Fatori, a town near the border with Niger in Borno State, where militants launched a five-pronged attack from multiple directions in the early hours of Wednesday, according to the Nigerian army.
The attack was met with "overwhelming resistance" from the country's forces, which were supported by air strikes. The militants, who advanced in large numbers on foot and deployed armed drones, were forced to retreat. Among those killed were three senior commanders, described as "key figures" behind the operation. The Nigerian army stated that the terrorists were attempting to breach the defenses of locations of troops, particularly along the frontage of Bravo Company from the Duguri general area.
The military recovered a significant cache of weapons from the scene, including assault rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, improvised explosive devices, and components of armed drones. Four Nigerian soldiers were wounded in the fighting and are receiving treatment. The incident highlights the ongoing insurgency in northeast Nigeria, which has been led by Boko Haram and its rival offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), since 2009.
The insurgency has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of around 2 million people. Violence has persisted despite military efforts, with Islamist militants continuing to target both civilians and security forces. Nigeria declared a national security emergency in November, while foreign partners, including the US, have stepped up support against Islamic State-linked fighters. In a separate statement, Nigeria's military said more than 200 militants had been killed in recent operations across the country.
The recent attack in Mallam Fatori follows a series of violent incidents in the region, including multiple suicide bombings that struck the northeastern city of Maiduguri earlier this month. The blasts, which targeted crowded locations including markets and a hospital entrance, killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 100. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks. The situation in northeast Nigeria remains volatile, with ongoing military operations and a significant humanitarian crisis.
