Let’s cut Tinubu some slack, by Ikechukwu Amaechi
**Giving Bola Tinubu a Fair Chance**
By Ikechukwu Amaechi
Last week, I expressed my concerns about the state of Nigeria's democracy under President Bola Tinubu. My article sparked heated reactions from readers, with some accusing me of being biased against the President. One reader even went as far as calling me a Tinubuphobe – someone who harbors a deep-seated dislike or fear of Tinubu.
Another reader sent me a text message that left me puzzled: "Sour grapes from name-calling!" I couldn't help but wonder what they meant. Was I being too harsh on Tinubu? Or was I simply pointing out legitimate concerns about his leadership?
As a journalist, my duty is to hold those in power accountable for their actions. But I also believe in giving leaders a fair chance to prove themselves. After all, we've seen many leaders in Nigeria make u-turns and change their policies for the better.
Tinubu, as a former Governor of Lagos State, has a reputation for being a shrewd politician who knows how to get things done. As President, he has promised to tackle some of Nigeria's most pressing issues, such as poverty, insecurity, and corruption.
However, his critics argue that he's not doing enough to address these issues. Some point to his handling of the economy, which they say has only worsened the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians. Others question his decision to appoint loyalists to key positions, which they see as an attempt to consolidate power.
As the debate continues, I believe it's essential to give Tinubu a fair hearing. Let's not jump to conclusions or make assumptions about his intentions. Instead, let's observe his actions and policies over time and see if they align with his campaign promises.
In the end, Nigeria deserves a leader who will put the country's interests above their own. If Tinubu is able to deliver on his promises, he'll earn the respect and trust of Nigerians. But if he fails to do so, we'll be justified in holding him accountable.
For now, let's give him a fair chance to prove himself. As the saying goes, "you can't judge a book by its cover." We'll reserve judgment until we see the results of his policies.
