**Get Ready for the 2026 Lagos Swimming Trials: The Search for the Next Aquatic Stars**
The Lagos State Sports Commission is gearing up to hold the 2026 Swimming Trials, a crucial event set to take place on Sunday, 22 March, at the Rowe Park Sports Complex in Yaba. This exciting development is part of the state's efforts to nurture and develop young talents in aquatic sports, a sector that has immense potential for growth in Nigeria.
Open to male and female swimmers aged 16 and under, the trials promise to be a thrilling spectacle with competitions across three age categories: 15-16 years, 13-14 years, and 12 years and under. The events will feature a wide range of swimming disciplines, including freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly races, as well as mixed freestyle and medley relays.
According to the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, the trials are more than just a selection exercise - they are a declaration of intent to develop the sports sector in the state. "We want to unearth talent at its most formative stage and provide the necessary structures for it to flourish," he said. Fatodu emphasized that every young swimmer who participates in the trials represents the future of Lagos aquatics and, by extension, the future of Nigerian aquatics.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Aquatics Association, Aderoju Ope-Ajayi, echoed Fatodu's sentiments, stressing that the initiative is designed to build a sustainable structure for swimming in the state. "This is about legacy," she said. "We want to create a culture of competitive aquatics in Lagos that is structured, inclusive, and sustainable."
The 2026 Swimming Trials offer a unique opportunity for young swimmers to showcase their talents and potentially become part of the next generation of aquatic stars in Nigeria. With the support of the Lagos State Sports Commission and the Lagos State Aquatics Association, the trials are set to be a resounding success, providing a platform for young athletes to rise to the occasion and make their mark in the world of swimming.
