The All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Obafemi Hamzat to contest in the party's 2027 governorship primaries. He received the clearance after appearing before the 11-member APC Governorship Screening Committee in Abuja on Saturday. The committee is chaired by Dr Benjamin Nwoye. Hamzat confirmed the development in a post on X, describing the screening process as transparent, deliberate and excellent.

He expressed gratitude for the clean bill of approval to proceed in the race. "Today in Abuja, I appeared before the APC Governorship Screening Committee ahead of our party primaries. I am grateful for the clean bill of approval to move forward," Hamzat said. He stated his political ambition is rooted in service and continuity of the current administration's policies. "This journey is about service and commitment to all Lagosians," he added.

Hamzat emphasized that the present government has built a strong foundation for Lagos's development. "We have built a solid foundation, and now we are ready to take the next step toward a greater and more inclusive Lagos. The work continues, and I am ready to keep moving forward with you," he said. The APC began the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms on April 28. Screening for aspirants took place from May 6 to May 9. The party's governorship primary election is scheduled for May 21.

Obafemi Hamzat calls for continuity while benefiting from a screening process chaired by Benjamin Nwoye, who was not part of the administration he wants to extend. The approval places him among the first to clear the APC hurdle ahead of the May 21 primary. His focus on an existing foundation gains weight only if that foundation includes the committee that evaluated him. The next phase will test whether endorsement from a federal panel strengthens or complicates his claim to local mandate.
