Kwara 2027: The Race For Ahmadu Bello Government House
**Racing Towards 2027: Kwara Stakes its Claim**
The 2027 general elections in Kwara state have officially kicked off, with stakeholders in the election engaging in intense consultations across the state's three senatorial districts. This development is not surprising, given that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq will be completing his eight-year tenure in 2027.
According to sources, the consultations are aimed at wooing supporters for the realization of their ambitions. Even the recent Ramadan and Lent periods were utilized by the gladiators to gain favor with their supporters through donations of gifts. The activities of these politicians are closely linked to the impending succession of Governor AbdulRahamn AbdulRazaq.
Governor AbdulRazaq emerged as the governor of the state on **May 29, 2019**, under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift from the long-standing rule of the Saraki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara. The APC's victory was made possible by the "O o to Ge" revolution, a political upset that shook the state.
The recent signing of the Electoral Act into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the subsequent release of the election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have further heightened political activities in the state. With Kwara known as the State of Harmony, the stage is set for a fierce competition among the state's senatorial districts, particularly Kwara Central, Kwara South, and Kwara North.
The ruling APC and the PDP are the dominant parties in Kwara, with the latter having produced governors in the past. Other parties, such as the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), have struggled to maintain their presence in the state.
Political observers are closely watching the ADC, a party that has attracted former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki's lieutenants and some APC members who feel betrayed by the ruling party's governance. Notable leaders of the ADC include former governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, former Ambassador to Japan Professor Issa Gana, and former Minister of Youths and Sports Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
Some APC members, under the aegis of Kwara Redemption, led by Hon. Iyiola Oyedepo, have defected to the ADC, pledging to work against the APC in the 2027 elections due to its alleged poor governance. However, statistics from the 2023 general elections show that the APC dominated in both Kwara Central and Kwara South senatorial districts, securing **61%** and **42%** of the votes cast, respectively.
