The Kogi state government has entered into an agreement with Agro Preciso Nigeria Limited and other partners to promote improved poultry breeds such as SASSO chickens. The introduction of these breeds is expected to boost food security, strengthen farmers' income, and improve the livelihoods of rural dwellers. According to Dr. Olufemi Bolarinwa, the state commissioner of Livestock Development, the programme aligns with the present government's vision to redesign the livestock industry and make it economically viable.
The programme aims to equip farmers and stakeholders with modern management skills, proper brooding techniques, and effective feeding practices. It is a collaborative effort between the government, private sector players, and development partners. Dr. Bolarinwa assured that the government will provide the necessary policy framework and enabling environment to ensure the success of the initiative.
The training programme was facilitated by international poultry expert, Wilfred Kooij, and covered topics such as breed characteristics, farm business management, and the role of extension services. Several participants appreciated the move of the Kogi state government in promoting improved poultry breeds.
The Kogi state government's decision to promote improved poultry breeds is a welcome move that has the potential to boost food security and improve the livelihoods of rural dwellers. The programme's focus on public-private partnerships and collaboration with development partners is a step in the right direction. However, the success of this initiative will depend on the government's ability to provide the necessary policy framework and enabling environment for its implementation. The introduction of SASSO chickens is expected to offer dual-purpose benefits, providing both meat and eggs, and remaining adaptable to local environmental conditions. This initiative has the potential to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in the state.
