Kaduna builds 36km road to link 66 farming communities
The Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, has commenced the construction of a 36-kilometre Bagoma–Gagumi road in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, which will benefit 66 farming communities in the council area.
The Managing Director of the Kaduna State Roads Agency, Abdullahi Ahmed, disclosed this during an inspection visit to the ongoing project on Sunday, describing the governor’s rural road development initiative as transformative.
According to him, when completed, the Bagoma–Gagumi road would surpass the recently inaugurated Gadan Gayan–Gwaraji–Kujama road, which currently ranks among the longest roads constructed by the administration.
The earlier 35-kilometre road cuts across three local government areas — Igabi, Kajuru and Chikun local government areas — and includes a 130-metre bridge over the Kaduna River, serving several rural communities.
Baba Ahmed said the Bagoma–Gagumi road would significantly improve the socio-economic conditions of residents in Birnin Gwari, noting that 66 farming communities would benefit directly from the project.
“The road will link farmers to markets, residents to schools and hospitals, and open up the area in a way that will significantly impact the local economy,” he said.
He explained that Birnin Gwari is one of Nigeria’s leading maize-producing local government areas and that the new road would ease the transportation of farm produce to urban markets.
“Birnin Gwari is known for its agricultural potential, particularly maize production. With this road in place, farmers will be able to move their produce more efficiently, which will boost economic activities and improve livelihoods,” he added.
The KADRA managing director said the project formed part of the governor’s broader rural infrastructure development plan aimed at expanding road networks across the state.
According to him, the administration embarked on the construction of 1,345 kilometres of roads across 20 local government areas.
He added that the government had already launched 150 infrastructure projects, of which 66 had been completed.
Ahmed noted that the Bagoma–Gagumi road project was being executed by CGC Nigeria Limited, an international construction company known for delivering large-scale infrastructure projects, including roads, bridges and water supply systems.
He said that although the project was scheduled for completion by the end of the year, the contractor had assured the state government of earlier delivery.
Also speaking, the Northern Regional Manager of the firm, Wang Hongxi, said the company had intensified work on the project to meet expectations.
“We have mobilised more workers and equipment to the site, and we are working around the clock to ensure timely completion of the project,” Hongxi said.
Residents of the benefiting communities expressed optimism that the road would bring economic relief and social development to the area.
A resident of the Bagoma community, Musa Bagoma, said the project would improve transportation and ease movement for farmers and traders.
“The road had been in a terrible condition for years, making transportation very difficult. Now it is being transformed into a modern road that will boost economic activities in our communities,” he said.
Another resident and trader, Dangajere Gagumi, said the project would make it easier for traders to transport goods to markets and enable children to travel safely to school.
“This road will change our lives. We will be able to transport our goods more easily, and our children can attend school without worrying about the bad roads,” he said.
Similarly, community member Ibrahim Mande commended the state government for prioritising rural development.
“The administration of Governor Uba Sani is showing commitment to improving the lives of rural residents. This road is a clear example of that commitment,” he said.
