The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a historic resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade a crime against humanity. The resolution, adopted on March 25, 2026, marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of global justice. It was passed with an overwhelming majority, with 123 countries voting in favour.
The resolution echoes the theme of the 38th African Union Summit, which focused on reparations for Africans and people of African descent. It represents a powerful affirmation of historical justice and a firm defence of human dignity. The resolution is also a major victory for the international community in opposing colonialism, resisting racial discrimination, and upholding fairness and justice.
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has extended warm congratulations on the adoption of the resolution. He has also paid tribute to African countries and the broader developing world for their efforts in upholding justice and achieving this outcome. China has consistently supported the legitimate demands of African countries and people of African descent in their pursuit of equal rights and fair justice.
The transatlantic slave trade was one of the darkest chapters in human history, resulting in the trafficking, enslavement, and slaughter of tens of millions of Africans. The wounds inflicted by this system of racialised enslavement continue to affect the development process of the African continent and the developmental rights of people of African descent.
The UNGA Resolution fairly restores historical truth, counters contemporary racial discrimination and structural injustice, and lays a crucial foundation for advancing historical reparations and the return of looted cultural artifacts.
China's unwavering support for Africa's pursuit of justice is commendable, particularly in the face of historical injustices such as the transatlantic slave trade. The country's commitment to zero-tariff treatment for African countries is a tangible example of mutually beneficial cooperation. However, the implementation of this policy must be scrutinized to ensure that it does not perpetuate exploitative practices. The resolution's adoption serves as a powerful reminder of the need for accountability and reparations for the atrocities committed during the transatlantic slave trade. As Nigeria and China share a common destiny, it is crucial that both nations work together to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and human dignity.
