**Breaking News: Tinubu Approves New IGP, Ensures Smooth Transition**
The Presidency has announced a new development in the Nigeria Police Force, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepting the resignation of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appointing Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as Acting IGP. This decision comes on the heels of Egbetokun's resignation letter, citing pressing family matters, which he tendered earlier on Tuesday.
President Tinubu has expressed deep gratitude to Egbetokun for his decades-long service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation. The President acknowledged Egbetokun's dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening Nigeria's internal security architecture during his tenure. Egbetokun was appointed in June 2023 and was set to serve a four-year term, concluding in June 2027.
The President has confidence in Disu's ability to lead the Nigeria Police Force, citing his experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity. Disu's appointment as Acting IGP is expected to provide steady and focused direction for the Force at a critical time. The President has assured Nigerians that the leadership transition will not disrupt ongoing security operations nationwide.
In line with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu's appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following the Council's consideration, Disu's name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation, as required by statute.
President Tinubu has reiterated his administration's commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities. The Presidency has assured Nigerians of a seamless transition, which will enable the Force to continue delivering on its mandate.
The appointment of Disu as Acting IGP is a strategic move by the President to ensure continuity and stability in the police force, particularly at a time when security challenges are prevalent across the country. As the new Acting IGP, Disu is expected to provide effective leadership and direction to the Force, working closely with other security agencies to address the nation's security concerns.
