Jigawa court begins Ramadan recess
**Nigerian Courts in Jigawa State Take a Break for Ramadan**
The High Court of Jigawa State has announced a temporary closure, known as a recess, to coincide with the holy month of Ramadan. This break will begin from Monday, March 9, 2026, and end on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
As part of preparations for the holy month, the Jigawa State Government recently reduced working hours for civil servants, from 8 hours to 6 hours a day, to allow them to observe their daily fasts without any hindrance. The new working hours are from 9 am to 3 pm on Mondays to Thursdays and 9 am to 1 pm on Fridays.
A statement issued by the Director of Publicity and Protocol Matters in the Jigawa State Judiciary, Abbas Wangara, explained that the court recess was approved by the Chief Judge of Jigawa State, Hon. Justice Umar M. Sadiq. During this period, all court sittings and judicial activities will be suspended, except for very urgent matters that cannot wait.
This decision is in line with the Nigerian Constitution, specifically Section 274, which allows for court recesses during the holy month of Ramadan. It is also in accordance with Legal Notice No. 1 of 2026.
In his statement, Wangara wished the judges and court staff a fruitful and peaceful recess, and expressed the hope that they will resume their normal activities after the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
The court recess is an opportunity for judges and court staff to observe Ramadan and participate in the joyous festivities that follow. It is a time for rest, reflection, and rejuvenation before returning to their duties.
