**A Fresh Chance for a Safer Press** The appointment of a new Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tunji Disu, has brought a glimmer of hope for Nigeria's hardworking journalists. The Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) has issued a call to action, urging Mr. Disu to prioritize the protection of press freedom and the safety of journalists across the country. Under the previous administration, journalists faced harassment, intimidation, and attacks while performing their duties. It's a painful reminder that our democracy's foundation, freedom of expression, is often taken for granted. The police, as a critical institution, must uphold the fundamental rights of all Nigerians, including the right to press freedom. IPI Nigeria's expectations from the new Inspector-General are clear: end the harassment and intimidation of journalists, review and withdraw pending cases against journalists, and establish clear communication channels with media stakeholders. A comprehensive reorientation programme for police personnel focused on press freedom and human rights is also necessary. The past administration's persistent violations of press freedom led to IPI Nigeria's decision to include Mr. Kayode Egbetokun in its "Book of Infamy." This book is a record of individuals and institutions that have promoted or facilitated attacks on press freedom in Nigeria. Mr. Disu has a unique opportunity to chart a different course and rebuild trust between the police and the media. A free and independent press is essential to sustaining our democracy, strengthening accountability, and enhancing transparency. The police and media roles in a democratic society are complementary, not adversarial. IPI Nigeria is ready to engage constructively with the new leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to address areas of concern. We wish Mr. Disu a successful and impactful tenure, urging him to seize this opportunity to restore confidence in the police's commitment to democratic values and the rule of law.
