In the face of this trend, the International Press Institute Nigeria (IPI Nigeria) has urged the new acting Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, to prioritize press freedom and promote a culture of respect for journalists' rights. Since his appointment, IGP Disu has made a bold statement, declaring that the era of intimidation is over. While this is a welcome development, IPI Nigeria believes that words must be matched with action. The group notes that the previous leadership under Kayode Egbetokun was characterized by a pattern of harassment, unlawful detention, and assault of journalists, resulting in at least 24 cases of police harassment against media professionals. This culture of impunity must be broken, and IGP Disu must take concrete steps to ensure the safety of journalists and uphold their constitutional rights. As a critical institution in a democratic society, the police have a constitutional responsibility to protect the fundamental rights of all Nigerians, including the right to freedom of expression and the press. IPI Nigeria urges IGP Disu to immediately end all forms of harassment, intimidation, and unlawful detention of journalists and to review and withdraw pending cases targeting media professionals. The group also advocates for a comprehensive reorientation programme for police officers to educate them on press freedom and human rights obligations. Furthermore, IPI Nigeria calls for the establishment of clear communication channels between police leadership and the media to prevent and resolve conflicts.
