President Bola Tinubu's handling of Nigeria's security challenges has been a subject of concern for many, but Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun is confident that the Federal Government is on top of the situation. Speaking at the 2026 National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, Abiodun acknowledged the scale of the challenges but insisted that efforts are underway to tackle them decisively.
The governor highlighted the Federal Government's efforts to strengthen security, including plans to recruit more personnel and enhance policing capacity. He also mentioned the introduction of state police to help combat the situation. Additionally, the United States has increased security cooperation with Nigeria, including intelligence sharing and military supplies.
Despite these efforts, security challenges persist across the country. Insurgent activities continue in the North-East, while banditry and kidnapping have risen in the North-West and North-Central regions. Tensions linked to separatist agitations have resulted in security incidents in the South-East.
Abiodun appealed for patience, noting that addressing deeply rooted national issues requires time. He also acknowledged that the security issues have had significant socio-economic consequences, including disruptions to farming activities and forced school closures.
President Tinubu's leadership on security is being put to the test, and Governor Abiodun's confidence in his handling of the situation is reassuring. However, the persistent security challenges across the country are a stark reminder of the need for decisive action. The Federal Government's efforts to strengthen security are welcome, but it is crucial that these efforts are translated into tangible results. The recent increase in security cooperation with foreign countries, including the United States, is a step in the right direction. As the country grapples with rising food prices and an increasing number of out-of-school children, it is imperative that the Federal Government takes concrete steps to address these socio-economic consequences of insecurity.
