Insecurity: NAS Demands Ban on NYSC Postings to High-risk States
**NYSC Deployment: NAS Urges Ban on Posting to High-Risk States**
The National Association of Seadogs, a non-governmental organization, has called for a review of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment system, citing growing insecurity across Nigeria as a major threat to young graduates participating in the scheme.
According to the association's leader, Dr Joseph Oteri, the current security situation in the country demands a re-examination of how the NYSC operates, particularly in terms of ensuring the safety of corps members. While the NYSC has played a crucial role in promoting national unity since its establishment in 1973, Dr Oteri believes that the safety of young graduates should never be compromised.
The association noted that with the rise of kidnapping, banditry, and violent attacks across several parts of the country, corps members are increasingly vulnerable, particularly when travelling long distances for orientation and primary assignments.
Recent incidents, such as the abduction of a prospective corps member in Sokoto, attacks involving corps members in Zamfara and the Federal Capital Territory, and past cases of kidnappings, violent attacks, and fatal road accidents, reflect a disturbing pattern over the past decade.
The association emphasized that these incidents are not isolated and are linked to the deployment system. However, they dismissed claims that families of kidnapped corps members are required to pay ransom, stating that there is no official NYSC policy to support such assertions.
While acknowledging the NYSC's contributions to national development, NAS is urging authorities to consider banning postings to high-risk states until the security situation improves. This move is aimed at protecting the lives and safety of young graduates who participate in the scheme. The association believes that reforms are necessary to ensure that the NYSC operates in a manner that prioritizes the safety and well-being of corps members.
As the security situation in Nigeria continues to deteriorate, the call for a review of the NYSC deployment system has sparked a national conversation on the need to prioritize the safety of young graduates.
