**INEC Readies for 2027 Elections, Issues Warning to Errant Transporters** As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to issue a revised timetable for the polls, in line with the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026. This move is a reaction to the fact that the commission's initial notice for the elections was issued under the old law. According to Prof. Joash Amupitan, INEC Chairman, the commission is currently reviewing its transport logistics model for optimal performance during the elections. This decision was prompted by the commission's Election Operations Dashboard, which revealed that only 45% of polling units in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils election were opened on time. In a stern warning to errant transporters, Prof. Amupitan vowed that any transporter that causes delay during the elections will be blacklisted. The commission has already identified some transporters responsible for delays in the FCT Area Council election and will be taking action against them. Furthermore, INEC plans to query staff who cause logistics delays, citing instances of such delays in the Kuje Area Council and Kabusa Ward in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). The commission has also drawn lessons from the recently conducted FCT Area Council election and state constituencies elections in Kano and Rivers States. One of the key takeaways is the issue of "voter migration", which generated public commentary. However, INEC has clarified that no voter has actually migrated, but rather, the expansion of voters' access to polling units initiative implemented in 2022 led to the redistribution of voters to less congested polling units. To put this into perspective, over 56,000 additional polling units were created nationwide, increasing the total from 119,972 to over 176,000. In the FCT alone, 411 polling units were decongested, and about 580,000 voters were redistributed to 1,156 polling units. As INEC prepares for the 2027 elections, it is clear that the commission is committed to learning from past experiences and making necessary adjustments to ensure a smooth and successful electoral process.
