**2027 Elections: INEC Sets New Dates, Osun Governorship Poll Moved**
Election season is around the corner, and Nigerians are about to witness a major milestone. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, January 16, 2027, for the highly anticipated presidential and National Assembly elections. In a recent development, the commission has also shifted the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections to Saturday, February 6, 2027.
This change in schedule is a result of the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the subsequent enactment of the Electoral Act 2026. The new law introduced adjustments to statutory timelines, which INEC has reviewed and realigned to ensure full compliance. The commission has issued a revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, which can be accessed on its official website.
The revised dates are not just about elections; they also have implications for our democratic process. The conduct of party primaries, including the resolution of disputes arising from primaries, will now commence on April 23, 2026, and end on May 30, 2026. Presidential and National Assembly campaigns will kick off on August 19, 2026, while governorship and state Houses of Assembly campaigns will start on September 9, 2026. Campaigns will end 24 hours before Election Day, as provided by law.
Nigerians are also aware that the Osun State governorship election had been scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026. However, this date has been rescheduled to Saturday, August 15, 2026. Some activities in respect of the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections had already been conducted, but the remaining activities will now be implemented in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026.
While this news may come as a surprise to many, it is essential to note that the revised dates are consistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2026. As we count down to the 2027 elections, Nigerians are urged to familiarize themselves with the revised timetable and schedule of activities to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
