Indian Consumer Goods Giant Marico Founder Harsh Mariwala’s Book ‘Harsh Realities’ to Get Screen Adaptation (EXCLUSIVE)

Indian Consumer Goods Giant Marico Founder Harsh Mariwala’s Book ‘Harsh Realities’ to Get Screen Adaptation (EXCLUSIVE)
India’s Almighty Motion Picture, the production company behind “Made in India – A Titan Story,” is moving to bring the business bestseller “Harsh Realities: The Making of Marico” to the screen, adapting the story of how Harsh Mariwala built one of India’s most recognized consumer goods companies from the ground up. The project is in early development, with writer Karan Vyas attached. Vyas previously worked on “Scam 1992,” “Scoop” and “Made in India – A Titan Story.” The adaptation extends Almighty Motion Picture’s growing focus on real-life Indian stories. At its center is Mariwala’s choice in 1987 to step away from his family’s business, Bombay Oil Industries Ltd., and launch Marico independently. The company has since grown into a multinational operation whose brands – including Parachute, Saffola, Set Wet, Livon, Beardo and Plix, among others – reach an estimated one in three Indians. Its international operations account for roughly 25% of group revenue. The source book, co-authored by Mariwala and business strategist Ram Charan, draws on Mariwala’s own account of the decisions, setbacks and leadership choices behind that growth. Popular on Variety Prabhleen Sandhu, co-founder of Almighty Motion Picture, said: “It’s an extraordinary story and we at Almighty Motion Picture feel fortunate to have the opportunity to bring it to the celluloid.” Co-founder Sunita Vinod Vyas said the project fits the company’s broader purpose. “At Almighty Motion Picture we have always wanted to tell important Indian stories. Mr. Mariwala’s journey is extremely inspiring, and it is an honour for us to bring it to the screen in a cinematic form,” she said. Vyas said the assignment carries personal significance. “It is an honour to get the opportunity to write such a real and inspiring story. I feel grateful and thankful to God to be part of this journey,” he said. Mariwala said the screen adaptation gives the book’s themes a new reach. “Every entrepreneurial journey carries moments that rarely make it to the headlines. The doubts, the long nights, and the decisions that quietly shape the direction of a business. ‘Harsh Realities’ came from those lived experiences. It was intended to be an honest account of what it takes to build over time,” he said, adding that cinema allows audiences to experience that journey in ways the written word cannot, and that the project speaks to a wider appetite for stories about India’s entrepreneurial past and the institutions that have shaped its economy.
