Igbo Union demands return to regional police, says it’ll guarantee security, justice
**Ndi Igbo Union Wants Return to Regional Police, Insists It'll Boost Security and Justice in Nigeria**
A leading Igbo organization, Ndi Igbo Worldwide Union, has called on the Nigerian government to reinstate the regional police system, which it believes is more effective in ensuring national security and justice. This demand comes as President Bola Tinubu is pushing for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
The Igbo union is of the opinion that state police is not the solution to the country's insecurity challenges. In a statement signed by its President, Mazi Ben Nwankwo, and Secretary, Chief Charles Edemuzo, the group highlighted the benefits of regional police, citing the country's most prosperous era, which was between 1955 and 1966.
During this period, the Northern, Western, and Eastern Regions of Nigeria operated with a significant degree of autonomy, including their own regional police forces. The union argues that this system allowed for more effective policing, as local officers were familiar with the terrain and spoke the local languages.
The Igbo union believes that the centralization of power that followed the end of regional government in 1966 has contributed to the country's current security challenges. The group is urging the government to learn from the past and adopt a regional police system that will allow for more effective community policing.
"Nigeria's history has shown that regional autonomy can lead to rapid development and prosperity. We urge the government to reconsider its stance on state police and adopt a regional police system that will guarantee national security, justice, and development," the statement said.
The union's call for regional police is a timely reminder of the importance of community policing in addressing the country's security challenges. As Nigeria continues to grapple with insecurity, the Ndi Igbo Worldwide Union is urging the government to adopt a more effective approach to policing that prioritizes community engagement and local knowledge.
