IG can lawfully serve beyond 60, says analyst
**IG Olatunji Disu Can Serve Beyond 60, Says Security Expert**
The debate over the impending retirement of Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, in April 2026 has been ongoing. However, a security expert and public analyst, Busayo Mogaji, has clarified that the length of time an IGP can serve is determined by law, not age or retirement benchmark.
Speaking on this development, Mogaji stated that the controversy is unnecessary. According to him, the Nigeria Police Act & Regulation, 2020, which established a four-year tenure for the office of the IGP, was designed to ensure stability, continuity of leadership, and sustained implementation of reforms in the Force.
Mogaji emphasized that the current commentary suggesting that the IGP must compulsorily retire upon reaching 60 years of age reflects a misunderstanding of the statutory provisions of the law. He explained that the law aims to insulate the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force from uncertainties arising from conventional public service retirement rules.
Mogaji urged stakeholders, commentators, and the general public to rely on verified legal frameworks when discussing policing reforms and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force. He stressed that the law is clear and must be interpreted in accordance with the provisions enacted by the National Assembly and assented to by the President.
In a country where law and order is crucial, Mogaji's clarification highlights the importance of understanding the legal framework governing the Nigeria Police Force. It is essential that we rely on verified information and avoid speculation when discussing matters related to policing reforms and the leadership of the Force.
With the Nigeria Police Force facing various challenges, including insecurity and public mistrust, stability and continuity of leadership are essential for effective policing. If IGP Disu's tenure is extended beyond 60 years of age, it could bring about much-needed stability and continuity in the Force.
