“I was away at AFCON and told I’d get two weeks extra, then they signed Nicolas Pépé” — Alex Iwobi explains how Arsenal let him go
**Exclusive: Alex Iwobi Opens Up on His Shocking Departure from Arsenal**
Nigerian football star Alex Iwobi has shared a revealing story about how his time at Arsenal Football Club came to an end. In a recent podcast interview, the former Gunners player recounted how he was on holiday in Dubai after a successful stint at the Africa Cup of Nations when he received news that would change his career path.
Iwobi had just finished a strong showing at AFCON, representing Nigeria with pride. Upon his return, then-Arsenal manager Unai Emery told him to take an extra two weeks off to enjoy his holiday with family. Little did Iwobi know that his club was already planning for his departure. During his stay in Dubai, the club signed Nicolas Pépé, a move that left Iwobi wondering about his future at Arsenal.
"I was in Dubai with my family, and then they signed another winger. I thought, if you really want me, why are you signing another player in my position?" Iwobi asked, reflecting on that moment.
Things took a turn when Iwobi's agent informed him that Everton Football Club was interested in signing him. In a shocking twist, Iwobi revealed that Arsenal had already sent his medical documents to Everton before he even had a chance to discuss the move with the Toffees' manager, Marco Silva.
Iwobi eventually agreed to join Everton, citing the need to step out of his comfort zone. However, he admitted that the transition was challenging, particularly in the initial months. Staying alone in a hotel in Liverpool for months, he struggled with loneliness, adjusting to a new city, and being away from his family and friends.
As an Arsenal youth team product, Iwobi confessed that it was tough to leave the only club he had known. "I've always been an Arsenal kid. Arsenal was all I knew. So going somewhere else and staying in a dark hotel room by myself... it was tough," he said.
Despite the difficulties, Iwobi persevered and continued to excel in the Premier League. His story serves as a testament to the unpredictability of football and the importance of adaptability in the face of change.
