Nollywood is at a crossroads, with the departure of foreign streaming platforms leaving the industry to fend for itself. To stay afloat, the next generation of filmmakers must innovate and develop strategies to keep the industry thriving. This is where MTV Shuga Naija's Innovation Film Lab comes in – a youth-led initiative that brings together emerging Nigerian filmmakers to produce original short films. The lab, launched in Lagos in October 2025, selected 20 participants through an open callout and paired them with mentors for training and guidance.
The participants were grouped into categories, including scriptwriters, producers, actors, and others. Uche Mordi, a 26-year-old storyteller, was one of the lucky few who got the chance to participate. She credits her friends for encouraging her to apply, and thankfully, things worked out in her favor. Uche's short film explores themes of resilience, dignity, and partnership within a family, highlighting the initiative and resourcefulness of the female lead.
The film also touches on traditional roles and how circumstances can force people to rethink them. Uche hopes that viewers will be inspired to support and empower women to contribute to society and earn from their skills. She also hopes that the project will open doors for her to tell more stories that matter and create opportunities to work on projects that inspire and challenge.
