It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Henry Nwosu, a former star midfielder of the Super Eagles, at the age of 62. He died on Saturday morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after spending several days in the ICU.
The news of his death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from football fans and enthusiasts across the country, all of whom remember his incredible contributions to Nigerian football.
Nwosu was a trailblazer in many ways. He burst onto the scene as a teenager, becoming the youngest member of the Super Eagles' squad at the 1980 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) held right here in Nigeria. At just 17, he played a crucial role in helping the country win its first continental title on home soil.
That magical moment marked the beginning of a remarkable career that spanned over a decade. Nwosu earned over 60 caps for the national team, scoring eight goals and participating in several international tournaments, including the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1982, 1984, and 1988 AFCON editions. He was also part of the technical crew at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and worked with the national U-23 team that won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
After retiring from active football, Nwosu transitioned into coaching, serving the national team in various capacities. In 2008, he was appointed head coach of the Nigeria national under-17 football team, where he continued to nurture young talent and contribute to the development of Nigerian football.
Nwosu's legacy extends far beyond his impressive playing career. He was a true patriot who dedicated his life to the growth and development of Nigerian football. His achievements on the pitch and his service to the national teams remain an integral part of our country's sporting history.
As we mourn the loss of this football legend, we take comfort in the knowledge that his impact on Nigerian football will continue to inspire future generations of players and coaches. May his memory live on forever.
