**Voter Apathy Stifles FCT Council Elections in Karu District**
In the heart of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a scene of relative calmness greeted residents and election officials at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Staff Quarters in Karu district during the Area Councils elections. However, a heavy security presence and an eerie silence hinted at a more complex story - voter apathy had taken centre stage.
Despite the large number of registered voters in the area, including nearly 1,500 in the CBN Staff Quarters, the polling units were quiet and largely empty. When Saturday Telegraph visited Units 1 and 2, the atmosphere was described as "calm and orderly" by officials, but the turnout was disappointing. At Unit 1, only a few voters had cast their ballots by 10:30 am, despite the over 735 expected to participate.
This trend was repeated at Unit 2, where officials noted a low turnout among the 767 registered voters. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials remained optimistic, however, believing that more residents would turn out to exercise their civic rights.
The security authorities, led by Commissioner of Police Abayomi Shogunle, were confident in the elaborate policing plans put in place to ensure a peaceful election. The massive deployment of security personnel was a deliberate move, not a reaction to threats, but rather to guarantee safety and deter potential troublemakers.
According to the Commissioner, the security presence was designed to deter anyone who may want to disrupt the election, while also ensuring the exercise proceeded without hindrance. The restriction on vehicular movement, which left many roads quiet, was also aimed at maintaining order and ensuring the smooth conduct of the polls.
As the election continues, it remains to be seen whether the security presence and measures will be enough to galvanize voters and boost turnout. The elections are a crucial aspect of Nigeria's democratic process, and it is essential that citizens participate to ensure the legitimacy and effectiveness of the councils.
In the meantime, the heavy security presence and low voter turnout in Karu district serve as a reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria's electoral process. It is crucial that we, as a nation, work towards increasing voter participation and ensuring that our elections are free, fair, and peaceful.
