Amaechi's Visit to El-Rufai Amid ICPC Release Sparks Debate
Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation, recently visited El-Rufai, the erstwhile governor of Kaduna State, following his temporary release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). This visit comes as El-Rufai mourns the loss of his mother, who passed away after battling age-related health challenges. The ICPC had detained El-Rufai since February 19, 2026, before releasing him without a court order.
El-Rufai's associate, Bashir Garba Sufyan, has revealed that the former governor spent his time in detention engaging in spiritual and intellectual activities. Sufyan disclosed that El-Rufai completed the Holy Qur'an, read 10 books, and even wrote some during his detention.
The ICPC had initially detained El-Rufai after questioning him at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. He was later arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on charges of alleged conversion of public property and money laundering. El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to the charges and had his bail application adjourned to March 31.
