A new survey by VistaPrint has found that Gen-Z small-business owners in the United States report higher levels of happiness than older entrepreneurs and traditional employees. The 2026 Small Business Happiness Report surveyed 610 small-business owners nationwide and found 94 per cent of Gen-Z respondents described themselves as happy or very pleased with their work and personal lives, compared to 84 per cent overall. The report noted that more than half of Gen-Z entrepreneurs said they were much happier now than in previous years, attributing the change to greater control over their schedules, decisions and workplace culture.

Many young entrepreneurs said they chose business ownership for creative control rather than climbing corporate ladders, reflecting a broader shift away from traditional office environments. The survey showed 85 per cent of Baby Boomers, 84 per cent of Gen-X and 81 per cent of Millennials also reported happiness in entrepreneurship. Satisfaction increased with business maturity, rising from 74 per cent in the first three years to 91 per cent between years three and five. Owners with 50 to 100 employees reported the highest happiness level at 92 per cent.

AI tools emerged as a significant factor in business satisfaction. Seventy-four per cent of respondents used AI monthly, with 54 per cent using it weekly or daily for writing, marketing, communication and analysis. Fifty-eight per cent said they became much happier or somewhat happier after adopting AI. Seventy per cent of business owners expect to grow their companies within the next year, and half believe evolving technology and workplace systems have better prepared them for economic challenges. Dave DeSandre, VistaPrint's senior vice president, said happiness is not just a result of entrepreneurial success but a driver of it. He noted small businesses are using new tools to focus on growth, staff and long-term planning. The report concluded that for many Gen-Z entrepreneurs, business ownership is as much about independence and values as it is about income.

💡 NaijaBuzz Take

Gen-Z entrepreneurs report near-universal happiness while most Nigerian youths face underemployment and limited access to capital. The U.S. survey highlights a reality where young people thrive through entrepreneurship because of available tools, markets and support systems. Nigerian youths have neither the same access to AI, funding nor enabling policies that make such happiness possible. Without structural changes, entrepreneurship in Nigeria remains a struggle, not a choice.
