Gateway to Holy Land: Ogun Airport eyes first Hajj flights, By Kayode Akinmade
**Ogun Airport Prepares to Host First Hajj Flights, Set to Become Gateway to the World**
The Ogun State Government is making significant strides in its quest to position the state as a major logistics and transportation hub in Nigeria's South-West region. One of the key initiatives is the Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo, which is gradually moving towards full operations.
In the past, intending air travellers from Ogun and neighbouring states had to travel to Lagos to board both domestic and international flights. However, with the modern airport now in place, this reality is about to change. The state government, under the leadership of Governor Dapo Abiodun, is intensifying preparations to launch international passenger services.
The first international operation planned for the airport is the airlift of Muslim pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen aviation infrastructure, stimulate economic growth, and position Ogun as a major transportation hub in the region.
To ensure a seamless launch, Governor Abiodun has initiated high-level engagements with federal agencies responsible for airport operations, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Customs Service, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and other regulatory and security institutions.
These consultations aim to ensure that all regulatory, operational, and security requirements are fully met before the airport begins handling international passenger services. The state government has mandated Dapo Olumide, a consultant on aviation matters, to lead discussions with the relevant agencies to coordinate the process.
The launch of international flights at the Gateway International Airport is expected to have a significant impact on the state's economy, creating new opportunities for businesses and residents. With this development, Ogun State is poised to become a major transportation hub in Nigeria's South-West region, and a true gateway to the world.
In the context of Nigeria, the development of the Ogun Airport is a significant step towards improving air transportation in the country. The airport is expected to reduce the pressure on Lagos, which is currently the main gateway to Nigeria for international flights. The launch of international flights at the Ogun Airport will also provide more options for air travellers, making travel more convenient and accessible.
