The French Embassy in Nigeria and Nile University inaugurated a plastic recycling micro-plant on Thursday in Abuja to advance environmental sustainability, research, and student entrepreneurship. The project was commissioned by the Deputy Head of Cooperation at the French Embassy, Pierre Andriamampianina, representing Ambassador Marc Fonbaustier. The ambassador said the micro-plant reflects France's support for Nigerian universities in addressing plastic pollution and contributes to a global movement against environmental degradation. He referenced a United Nations conference co-chaired by France and Costa Rica in Nice in June 2025, where plastic pollution was a key focus, and cited a scientific declaration from a WHO summit in Lyon, France, on the health risks of plastics. The facility is expected to become a hub for applied research and community transformation, turning plastic waste into marketable products. Ambassador Fonbaustier said the project demonstrates how local initiatives can connect with global environmental efforts. He recalled that the collaboration began with the donation of a fabrication laboratory, followed by training for staff from 14 Nigerian universities. Nile University's vice-chancellor, Dili Dogo, said the micro-plant builds on earlier cooperation and proves the embassy's commitment beyond diplomacy. He quoted the ambassador's response during a previous visit: "we must move further." Dogo said the university plans to establish a vocational skills school to enhance practical training. He stressed that plastic waste, often discarded, can be converted into wealth through innovation.
