Four people were killed in an ambush by armed attackers on the Aila-Odugheho road in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The attack occurred on Saturday along the rural route, residents said. The victims were identified as Ochefije Elijah Ojema, Igojuju Husaini, Odiya Ochowechi and Ochoyoda Adejo.
Agatu LGA Chairman Melvin Ejeh confirmed the incident on Sunday in Makurdi. He attributed the ambush to improved community security that has made direct attacks on settlements more difficult. "Because of the robust security strategies we have put on the ground in the community, it's now difficult to attack and overrun any community in Agatu LGA, hence they resort to ambush which is a little more complex to confront," Ejeh said.
Clearance operations are ongoing in the community forest, involving security agencies, the Divisional Police Officer and local vigilantes. DSP Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, said she had not yet received a report from the divisional officer at the time of reporting.
Melvin Ejeh claims strong security prevents community overruns, yet attackers still operate freely enough to carry out fatal ambushes on major roads. The deaths of Ochefije Elijah Ojema, Igojuju Husaini, Odiya Ochowechi and Ochoyoda Adejo expose the gap between official claims and safety realities. Residents remain vulnerable despite ongoing clearance operations. No explanation has been offered for the delayed police report.
