The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to eliminating tuberculosis (TB) from Nigeria by 2030. This commitment was made in a message to commemorate World Tuberculosis Day 2026, with the theme: "Yes! We Can End Tuberculosis." The First Lady, who is the Global and National Stop TB Champion, expressed confidence that sustained political will and support from national and global partners would lead to the eradication of TB in the country.
The theme of this year's commemoration serves as a reminder of the importance of strong national leadership and collective efforts in accelerating progress toward ending the TB epidemic. Nigeria has made significant strides in reducing new cases, but there is still a long way to go. To achieve the goal of ending TB by 2030, the First Lady emphasized the need to intensify efforts in boosting domestic financing, raising awareness, expanding early detection, strengthening access to quality treatment, and eliminating the stigma that prevents many from seeking care.
President Bola Tinubu's administration must be held accountable for its commitment to eliminating TB by 2030. The First Lady's assurance that sustained political will and community engagement will lead to this goal is welcome, but concrete actions are needed to back up these words. Nigerians expect tangible progress in boosting domestic financing, expanding access to quality treatment, and eliminating the stigma surrounding TB. The government must also address the systemic issues that hinder the effective implementation of TB control measures. Ultimately, the success of this goal will depend on the government's willingness to allocate sufficient resources and prioritize the health and well-being of Nigerians.
