A devastating fire has ravaged the Ebonyi state Ministry of Health cold store in Abakaliki, destroying property worth hundreds of millions of naira. The facility, located at Block 5, Centenary City, housed critical immunisation materials and equipment before the inferno consumed everything in its path.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, was at the scene to assess the damage. According to him, the cold store contained vaccines, vaccine carriers, cold chain boxes, laptops, documents, refrigerators, solar-powered units, batteries, and inverters, all of which were destroyed. Hospital beds and foams supplied by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) for distribution to MAMII local government areas were also lost.
The fire dealt a significant blow to the state's immunisation programme, as essential vaccines, including BCG, pentavalent, and HPV, were stored in the facility. Despite the scale of damage, Dr. Ekuma expressed relief that no lives were lost. He commended the swift response of fire service personnel, security operatives, and officials of the Ministry of Power and Energy for preventing the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but Dr. Ekuma noted that the facility had been without public power supply for about five days, while its solar backup system was faulty before the incident. A committee has been set up to investigate the cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
The recent fire at the Ebonyi state Ministry of Health cold store highlights the need for improved infrastructure and emergency response systems in the state. The destruction of immunisation materials and equipment will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the state's immunisation programme, putting vulnerable populations at risk. Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru must take responsibility for ensuring that the state's health facilities are equipped to handle emergencies and that the necessary resources are allocated to prevent such incidents in the future. The people of Ebonyi deserve better, and it is the government's duty to provide them with access to quality healthcare services.
