FIFA sanctions Nigeria, Dr Congo over misconduct
**FIFA Hands Sanctions to Nigeria and Congo DR Over Misconduct in World Cup Qualifier**
In a recent development, the global football governing body, FIFA, has imposed sanctions on Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo DR) following a series of misconducts during their 2026 World Cup qualifier continental playoff.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were defeated by Congo DR 4-3 on penalties after the match ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time. Unfortunately, the conduct of fans from both nations marred the occasion. According to FIFA's disciplinary report, Nigerian fans were guilty of disorderly conduct, including throwing objects onto the field, which is in contravention of FIFA's rules.
On the other hand, Congo DR fans were accused of using laser pointers to distract Nigerian players, a clear breach of FIFA's regulations. Both countries have been fined accordingly, with Nigeria being hit with a 1,000 Swiss Francs penalty, while Congo DR was docked 5,000 Swiss Francs.
It's worth noting that some of these disciplinary decisions can be appealed, although FIFA remains mum on whether Nigeria and Congo DR can challenge their respective sanctions. Meanwhile, Nigeria had also lodged a complaint against Congo DR for allegedly fielding ineligible players during the playoff match, but FIFA has chosen not to comment on this issue.
The victory of Congo DR has earned them a spot in the intercontinental playoff, which will take place in Mexico later this month. The tournament will determine the final two teams that will qualify for the 2026 World Cup. As Nigerian football fans eagerly await the outcome, they will also be keeping a close eye on the developments surrounding the country's participation in the global competition.
